Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your firm the answer when someone asks a question to an AI assistant or an answer box, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI features. For a law firm it means three things: a site AI crawlers can read, pages that answer clients' exact questions, and consistent listings, reviews and mentions on the sources assistants trust. AEO builds on SEO and is largely the same work as GEO.
AEO in plain terms
A search engine gives a list of links and lets you choose. An answer engine gives an answer, often naming a few options. AEO is optimizing to be one of the names or the quoted source. The related term GEO (generative engine optimization) comes from a 2023 research paper by researchers at Princeton University and IIT Delhi, presented at KDD 2024. In client work the two are used interchangeably; our GEO vs SEO vs AEO comparison covers the overlap.
What AEO means for a law firm
Someone injured in a crash does not type "personal injury attorney Dallas". They ask "I was hit by a truck, what do I do and who do I call?" An answer engine responds with steps and sometimes firm names. AEO is the work that makes your firm one of those names, and your page one of the sources.
The six things a firm does about it
| # | Action | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Let AI crawlers in. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt | Sites that opt out are not shown in ChatGPT search answers |
| 2 | Be indexable and snippet-eligible on Google | Google says that is all that is required for AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| 3 | One page per case type that answers the situational question plainly, with your state's deadline and the statute | Assistants quote pages that answer directly |
| 4 | One consistent firm record across Google Business Profile, Yelp, Avvo, Justia, Super Lawyers and your site | Mismatched facts give an assistant a reason to skip you |
| 5 | Recent reviews that name the case type | Reviews are a major source for local answers |
| 6 | Measure monthly by asking the same questions in each assistant | You cannot see a ranking position, only whether you are named |
What does not work
- Chasing a secret AEO formula. Google states there are "no additional requirements" and no special optimizations for its AI features beyond normal Search eligibility, and it says you do not need new markup or AI text files.
- Mass-produced AI city pages, bought reviews or keyword stuffing.
- Paying for ChatGPT Ads and expecting a recommendation. Ads are labeled and separate from the answer.
How AEO differs from the paid slot
AEO is earned and slow to compound. ChatGPT Ads are paid and immediate. Bookedly (bookedly.co), an AI marketing agency for law firms, does both because they cover different moments: see AI SEO for law firms and ChatGPT Ads. We cannot promise placement in any AI answer; we show you each month which questions name you and which do not.
How to start in an afternoon
- Open yourfirm.com/robots.txt and look for blocks on OAI-SearchBot. See should a law firm block GPTBot?
- Search your firm in Google Maps and Yelp. Compare name, address and phone to your site.
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity ten questions your clients would ask in your city. Write down who is named.
- Read why isn't my law firm showing up in ChatGPT?
Questions
What does AEO stand for?
Answer engine optimization.
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No, but it builds on it. SEO aims at a ranking in a list of links; AEO aims at being named or quoted in an answer.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
In practice yes. GEO is the research term; AEO emphasizes being the answer.
Can I guarantee ChatGPT will mention my firm?
No. Nobody controls the answer. You can improve the sources it reads and measure the result.
How long does AEO take?
The first month is cleanup of your site, listings and facts; new mentions usually start from month two.
