DUI lawyer marketing for the first 72 hours after an arrest.
After a DUI arrest, the person has days, not months, to act, because the license deadline is short. DUI lawyer marketing has to put your firm in front of them in that window: in the AI answer, under it, on Google, and on the phone when they call. Bookedly runs ChatGPT Ads, AI SEO, and Google and Meta ads for DUI defense firms, and reports how many leads became retained clients.
It's worth calling one soon. In California you generally have 10 days to request a DMV hearing about your license, and that's separate from the court case. A few DUI lawyers in San Diego:

How people look for a DUI lawyer now.
A DUI case starts with an arrest and a stack of paperwork: a citation, a court date, and often a notice that the state is taking the license. Then someone starts looking for a lawyer. Sometimes it's the driver. Often it's a parent, a spouse or the friend who picked them up.
"My husband got arrested for DUI tonight and he's still at the jail. Who do we call?"
A family member, at an hour your office is closed."Got a DWI in Houston last night and they took my license. Can I still drive to work?"
The license question comes before the court question."First DUI, blew a .09, no accident. Do I need a lawyer or can I just plead?"
Unsure a lawyer is worth it, and comparing prices."Second OWI in Michigan in five years. Am I going to jail?"
Higher stakes, harder conversation."I drive a truck for a living. What happens to my CDL after a DUI in my own car?"
Their job is on the line."I refused the breathalyzer. Is that worse than failing it?"
Refusals carry their own license penalties. Why the first 24 to 72 hours decide who gets hired.
Most DUI arrests start two cases. The charge goes to court. The license goes through an administrative process at the state's motor vehicle or public safety agency, with its own short deadline.
| State | Name of the charge | Deadline to ask for a hearing | Counted from |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | DUI | 10 days | Receipt of the DMV's order of suspension |
| Florida | DUI | 10 days | Issuance of the notice of suspension |
| Texas | DWI | 15 days | Receipt of the notice of suspension |
| Wisconsin | OWI | 10 days | The notice date, for a chemical test refusal (request goes to the court) |
Many people never use the window. In its 2021 fact sheet, California's DMV reported that fewer than a third of drivers facing an administrative suspension (30.9%) challenged it and were scheduled for a hearing.
For a DUI firm, that deadline is the marketing calendar. A person who finds you on day two still has time to request the hearing. A person who finds you on day twelve in California may have lost that part of the case. So DUI marketing has to run at night and on weekends, and someone has to answer. If the arrest happened on a Friday night, the search can start Saturday morning, when many offices are closed. Live answering, text-back and a weekend booking link aren't extras in this practice.
DUI, DWI or OWI: use the word your state uses.
Texas law calls it driving while intoxicated (DWI). New York has DWI, aggravated DWI at a .18 BAC or higher, and a lesser charge, driving while ability impaired (DWAI). Michigan and Wisconsin say operating while intoxicated (OWI), and Michigan adds operating while visibly impaired (OWVI). Massachusetts uses OUI. California and Florida use DUI.
People type the word on their paperwork. A Texas firm whose pages only say "DUI" can miss the person who asks "do I need a DWI lawyer for a first offense in Houston," in Google or in ChatGPT. Use your state's term in page titles, headings, your Google Business Profile and ads, and the common term once per page for people who don't know the difference.
Local court knowledge is the content
A DUI client wants to know what happens at their courthouse, not DUI in general: which court has the case, what the first appearance looks like, how the license hearing works. In Massachusetts, for example, the RMV holds chemical test refusal hearings only at its Boston (Haymarket) service center. Most competitors' pages don't say things like that. Writing them down, court by court, is the part of DUI lawyer SEO that's hardest to copy, and it gives AI assistants something specific to quote.
DUI defense is several practices under one name.
Different clients, different questions, different value. Where volume allows, each gets its own pages and budget.

ChatGPT and AI assistants

Referrals and directories
Other lawyers, past clients, Avvo, Justia. AI assistants read the directories too.
Facebook and Instagram
Weak for new DUI clients and limited by Meta's personal attributes rule. Useful for people who already visited your site.
The ad-rule traps specific to DUI.
Meta: no "Arrested for DUI?"
Meta's advertising standards don't allow ads that assert or imply the viewer's personal attributes, and criminal record is on the list. Meta's own example of a violating ad is "Criminal record holding you back? We can help you find a job." Questions count too, so "Arrested for DUI last night?" breaks the rule. A line about your firm, like "A San Diego DUI defense firm that answers the phone tonight," is the safer kind.
Google: no remarketing lists for criminal defense
Google treats "commission of a crime" as a sensitive category in personalized advertising and names criminal defense lawyers as an example. Advertisers in it can't use advertiser-curated audiences: no Customer Match, no lists of your own site visitors, no lookalike segments. DUI campaigns on Google have to win on keywords, location, schedule and the landing page. Google also doesn't allow ads for bail bond services, so a joint "bail and defense" offer can't run there.
Your state bar
Results language is where DUI ads get into trouble: "charges dropped," "license saved," "not guilty." Your state's rules on misleading communications apply to every ad and page, whoever writes them, and some states require filing or labeling. Our guide to law firm advertising rules covers the main ones.

Your intake team marks each lead: retained, not a fit, chose another firm, or still deciding.

- Show me sample Meta ads.If they ask "Arrested for DUI?", they break Meta's personal attributes rule.
- How will you run Google without remarketing lists?Criminal defense is a sensitive category there.
- Will you report retained clients, or only leads? If the report stops at leads, you can't tell which channel pays.
- Do you run ChatGPT Ads yet? It's new and few agencies run it.
- Do you promise rankings or a number of cases?Nobody controls where Google or ChatGPT places a firm.
DUI lawyer marketing, answered plainly.
What is DUI lawyer marketing?
Everything a DUI defense firm does to be the firm a person calls after an arrest: showing up in AI answers and on Google, running ads on ChatGPT, Google and Meta, and answering fast enough to be hired before the license deadline passes.
Should we market as DUI, DWI or OWI?
Use the term your state's law and paperwork use in titles, headings and ads, and mention the common term once per page. A Texas firm should lead with DWI, a Michigan or Wisconsin firm with OWI.
Can DUI lawyers advertise on Facebook and Instagram?
Yes, but ads can't assert or imply that the viewer has a criminal record, including by asking a question. Ads about your firm and what it does are the safe route.
Can DUI lawyers use Google remarketing?
Not with advertiser-curated audiences. Google lists criminal defense lawyers under its "commission of a crime" sensitive category, which rules out Customer Match, your own visitor lists and lookalike segments. Search campaigns on keywords and locations still run.
Can DUI lawyers advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes. Every advertiser goes through OpenAI's business verification and ad review. We set it up and handle it. You approve every ad before it runs.
How much should a DUI firm spend on marketing?
It depends on your city, the case types you want and how many cases you can take. ChatGPT Ads can start around $25 a day in ad spend. We build the budget per case type and show it to you before anything runs.
Do you only work with DUI firms?
No. We work with law firms across practice areas in the US. We take one firm per case type, per city, and it's month-to-month, with no long-term contract.
