A law firm marketing plan starts with the number of signed cases you want, not a list of channels. Work backwards to the leads you need, make sure intake can answer them, keep most of the budget on what already signs cases, and test one or two new channels at a time. In 2026 those tests should include AI search and ChatGPT Ads. Judge every channel by one number: cost per signed case.
Most firms don't lack marketing ideas. They lack a plan that ties spending to signed cases, so every vendor pitch sounds as good as the last. This guide gives you that plan, a 12-month template to fill in, and the law firm marketing strategies worth testing in 2026. It works for any practice area.
Step 1: Set goals in signed cases
You can't deposit a lead. Set the goal in signed cases per month and work backwards, once for each practice area you want to grow, because a family law consultation and a truck accident case don't share the same math.
| Line | How to get it | Your number |
|---|---|---|
| Signed cases per month | Your revenue goal for the practice area, divided by your average fee per case | |
| Consult-to-signed rate | Signed cases divided by consultations, over the last 6 to 12 months | |
| Consultations needed | Signed cases goal divided by your consult-to-signed rate | |
| Lead-to-consult rate | Consultations divided by qualified leads, same period | |
| Qualified leads needed | Consultations needed divided by your lead-to-consult rate | |
| Allowable cost per signed case | Average fee per case, times the share of that fee you're willing to spend to win the case |
A firm wants 10 signed cases a month. It signs 1 in 3 consultations, so it needs 30 consultations. Half of its qualified leads book a consultation, so it needs 60 qualified leads a month. Now the plan has a target every channel can be measured against.
Don't know your rates? That's the plan's first finding, and month 1 of the template.
Step 2: Get intake ready before you spend more
Marketing creates a chance to talk to someone. Intake turns it into a case. In Clio's 2024 Legal Trends Report, secret shoppers posing as potential clients found that only 33% of law firms replied to an email inquiry, only 40% answered the phone, and 48% couldn't be reached by phone at all, even after leaving a message. More marketing only makes missed calls more expensive.
Before you raise any budget, check each of these:
- A person answers calls during business hours, and someone covers nights and weekends.
- Web forms and chats get a reply within minutes, not the next morning.
- Every channel has its own tracking number and tagged form.
- Every lead is logged in one place, a CRM or intake system, with its source, case type and outcome.
- Calls are recorded where your state's consent rules allow, and someone reviews a sample every week.
- Leads who don't book get follow-up by text and email for at least a week.
- The intake script qualifies each case type and books the consultation on the first call.
- One person owns the numbers and reports them monthly.
You'll also need a website with a page for each main case type and a CRM that records outcomes. They aren't marketing channels, but every channel depends on them.
Step 3: Pick the channel mix and set the budget
A law firm marketing strategy is mostly a decision about where to show up when someone needs a lawyer. Some channels work in days, others take months but keep paying off. A good mix has both.
| Channel | What it does | How fast | You pay for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search ads | Shows your firm to people searching for a lawyer right now | Days | Clicks |
| Google Local Services Ads | Puts the Google Verified badge at the top of results | Weeks, after verification | Leads |
| Google Business Profile and reviews | Gets you into the map results for your city | Months | Time |
| SEO and case-type pages | Brings in searches you'd otherwise pay for | Months | Time and content |
| AI search visibility | Gets your firm named when people ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI for a lawyer | Months | Time and content |
| ChatGPT Ads | A sponsored spot under relevant ChatGPT answers, where you're licensed | Days to weeks, after verification | Views or clicks |
| Meta ads | Reaches people before they search, and brings back site visitors | Days | Views or clicks |
| Referrals and past clients | Cases from other lawyers and former clients | Ongoing | Time |
Budget logic that holds up in a partner meeting
- Start from the ceiling
Allowable cost per signed case times your monthly goal is the most that practice area can spend.
- Fund what already works
Put most of the budget on channels that already sign cases, judged by cost per signed case, not cost per lead.
- Keep a fixed test budget
A separate amount for one or two new channels, with a pass mark set in advance: "at or under our allowable cost per signed case within 90 days, or we stop."
- Give each test enough to learn something
A handful of clicks proves nothing. ChatGPT Ads can start around $25 a day in ad spend; competitive Google categories usually need more.
- Move money monthly, not weekly
Cases take time to sign. Give new channels a full quarter.
The 12-month law firm marketing plan template

18 law firm marketing strategies and ideas for 2026
The law firm marketing ideas we'd consider first in 2026. Pick the ones that fill your plan's gaps, not all at once.
- Get named by AI assistants
People now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI which lawyer to call. Our guide on getting recommended by ChatGPT walks through the steps, and AI SEO is how we do it for firms.
- Test ChatGPT Ads while it's early
Sponsored spots under relevant answers, from around $25 a day in ad spend. See what ChatGPT ads cost and how we run ChatGPT Ads for law firms.
- Write pages AI answers can quote
Put a plain, direct answer near the top of each page, then the detail. AI answers pull from pages like that.
- Build one page per case type
Send each ad to the page that matches it, not your homepage.
- Finish your Google Business Profile
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and counts reviews toward prominence. Fill in every field.
- Make reviews part of closing a case
Ask every satisfied client, as routine. Never buy or write reviews: the FTC's 2024 rule bans fake ones.
- Run Search ads on case-type searches
Separate campaigns per case type show cost per signed case for each.
- Apply for Local Services Ads
You pay per lead, not per click. Verification takes time, so start early.
- Retarget site visitors on Meta
Most visitors leave without calling. Facebook and Instagram keep you in front of them while they decide.
- Answer leads in minutes, at any hour
An answering service, an on-call rotation or a well set up AI receptionist. Nobody should wait until morning.
- Text back every missed call
An automatic "we'll call you right back" text keeps leads from calling the next firm.
- Track every lead to a signed case
Source, case type and outcome on every lead. Without it, the rest is guesswork.
- Build a referral network with other lawyers
ABA Model Rule 7.2 allows reciprocal referral agreements only if they aren't exclusive and the client is told. Your state may differ.
- Stay in touch with past clients
A short newsletter a few times a year keeps your name in mind for their friends and family.
- Serve Spanish speakers properly
A Spanish-speaking person on intake and real Spanish pages, not a translation widget.
- Turn intake questions into short videos
One-minute answers for your site, YouTube and social.
- Get mentioned locally
Local news, bar events, sponsorships and podcasts. Trusted mentions help with Google and AI assistants.
- Keep directory listings identical
Same name, address, phone and practice areas on Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Yelp and the rest.
For the bigger picture, see law firm marketing, or personal injury marketing if you run an injury practice.
How to measure: cost per signed case
Cost per signed case tells you whether a channel works. Everything else explains why it moved.
Everything you spent on a channel in a period (ad spend, management fees, tools) divided by the cases signed from that channel in the same period.
| Number | What it tells you | Check it |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per lead | Whether a channel fills the top of the funnel at a reasonable price | Weekly |
| Lead-to-consult rate | Whether intake turns calls and forms into appointments | Weekly |
| Consult-to-signed rate | Whether the channel brings the right kind of case | Monthly |
| Cost per signed case | Whether the channel is worth the money | Monthly |
| Fees by channel | The real return, once cases resolve | Quarterly |
| AI visibility | Whether assistants name your firm for your case types | Monthly |
Contingency cases can take a long time to pay, so use signed cases as the early measure and fees as the late one. Tracking also undercounts some channels: people hear a firm's name in an AI answer, then search for it on Google, and the lead shows up as "Google." Ask every new caller how they first heard about you.
The ethics check
Everything in this plan is advertising under your state's rules. Most states follow the ABA Model Rules: 7.1 bans false or misleading statements, 7.2 requires a responsible lawyer's name and contact information, and 7.3 limits live solicitation. Past results, testimonials and words like "specialist" carry extra conditions in many states.
Some states, including Texas, Florida, Nevada, Louisiana and Mississippi, require you to file certain ads with the bar, with fees and deadlines. Build that lead time into your launch months. For ChatGPT specifically, OpenAI allows US legal ads only where the advertiser is licensed. Our guide Can lawyers advertise on ChatGPT? covers OpenAI's policy and the state rules in detail.
Rules vary by state and change. Check with your bar, or its ethics hotline, before launching anything new.
Where Bookedly fits
Bookedly runs the AI and ads part of this plan for law firms: ChatGPT Ads, AI SEO so assistants name your firm, and Google and Meta ads. Personal injury is our deepest specialty, and we work with other practice areas too. You approve every ad before it goes live.
We don't build websites or CRMs. If you need either, we'll tell you what has to be in place and work with what you already have.
Questions
What should a law firm marketing plan include?
Goals in signed cases by practice area, your conversion rates, an intake check, a channel mix with a budget split between proven channels and tests, a monthly rollout, your bar's advertising rules, and one measure for every channel: cost per signed case.
How do you market a law firm on a small budget?
Fix intake first: answering every call costs less than buying more calls. Then do the low-cost work that compounds, like your Google Business Profile, reviews and case-type pages. Add one paid channel at a time and judge it on cost per signed case.
How much should a law firm spend on marketing?
Work it out from your own numbers, not a rule of thumb. Your allowable cost per signed case times the signed cases you want each month is the most you can spend and still hit your margin. Split that between proven channels and a fixed test budget.
What are the best law firm marketing strategies for growth in 2026?
Fast intake and full lead tracking come first. The biggest change in 2026 is AI: getting named when people ask ChatGPT or Google's AI for a lawyer, and testing ChatGPT Ads while competition is light. Google, reviews and referrals still do most of the work.
Should a law firm advertise on ChatGPT?
It's worth a test for most US firms. OpenAI allows legal ads where the advertiser is licensed, and campaigns can start around $25 a day in ad spend. Run it alongside Google with a pass mark, and check your state bar's rules first.
How long does a law firm marketing plan take to show results?
Paid channels like Google Search ads and ChatGPT Ads can bring calls within days. SEO, reviews and AI search visibility usually take months. Judge new tests on a full quarter, and expect signed cases to lag behind leads.
