Bankruptcy attorney marketing for people who ask AI before they ask a lawyer.
Bankruptcy attorney marketing has always meant reaching people at a hard moment: a garnishment notice, a foreclosure letter, a collection lawsuit. Now many of them type the whole story into ChatGPT first. Bookedly runs ChatGPT Ads, AI SEO, and Google and Meta ads for bankruptcy firms, written to fit Section 528 and the platforms' rules, and reports how many consultations became paid, filed cases.
It depends on your income, what you own and whether you're behind on a house or car. A bankruptcy attorney can run the means test with you, and many offer a free consultation. A few in Columbus:

How people find a bankruptcy lawyer in 2026.
Filings are climbing. The federal courts counted 608,511 bankruptcy filings in the 12 months ending June 30, 2026, up 12.2% from a year earlier. Chapter 7 cases rose to 382,161 and Chapter 13 cases to 215,490. More people are in trouble, and more firms are competing for them.
Where they look has changed too. In a February 2026 survey, Pew Research Center found that 44% of U.S. adults say they use ChatGPT. Someone with a garnishment notice can now ask an assistant in private, in their own words, and get an answer that names three or four firms.
Google, the map results and referrals from past clients and other attorneys still bring cases. Good bankruptcy lawyer marketing covers all of it, with AI answers added on top.
"My employer says my wages will be garnished. How do I stop it?"
A page on the automatic stay, in plain words, answers this before the next paycheck."What's the difference between Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 if I make about $60,000?"
Firms that explain the means test for your state get quoted."My foreclosure sale is in three weeks. Can bankruptcy stop it?"
The most urgent question you'll get. It needs its own page and its own ad."How much does a bankruptcy lawyer cost, and can I pay in installments?"
People broke enough to file ask about price first. Answer it honestly."Will I lose my car if I file Chapter 7?"
Your state's exemptions, explained clearly, answer it."Who's a good bankruptcy attorney in Columbus that doesn't charge a fortune?"
Decided by your listings, reviews and how clearly you state your fees. What makes bankruptcy clients different.
A notice starts the clock
For many clients, a letter is what makes it urgent: a garnishment, a collection lawsuit, a foreclosure date. Filing triggers the automatic stay, which generally stops lawsuits, wage garnishments and even collection calls. That's why "how do I stop" searches convert, and why someone has to answer the phone after hours.
Shame comes before the search
Many clients feel embarrassed and research privately before they talk to anyone. They want a calm explanation, not a sales pitch. Judgmental or pushy ads lose them.
Price is the first question
Your clients are short on money by definition, so they compare fees. In Chapter 7 the court can let individuals pay the filing fee in up to four installments, and can waive it for some low-income filers. In Chapter 13 many districts set a presumed reasonable attorney fee. Pages that explain how payment works with your firm beat pages that hide it.
The ad rules that are specific to bankruptcy.
On top of state bar rules, bankruptcy firms face a federal statute and two ad platforms that treat debt as sensitive. This is a summary, not legal advice.
Section 528: "We are a debt relief agency"
Under 11 U.S.C. § 528, a debt relief agency must clearly and conspicuously disclose, in any advertisement of bankruptcy assistance directed to the general public, that the services are about bankruptcy relief. It must also use this statement, or one substantially similar: "We are a debt relief agency. We help people file for bankruptcy relief under the Bankruptcy Code." The statute names general media, mailings, and telephonic or electronic messages, so we treat it as covering search, social and ChatGPT ads.
Attorneys are not exempt. In Milavetz, Gallop & Milavetz v. United States (2010), the Supreme Court held that attorneys who give bankruptcy assistance to assisted persons are debt relief agencies, and upheld the disclosure rules. Section 528(b) also reaches ads that offer help with foreclosures, credit defaults, debt collection pressure or excessive debt, even if they never say "bankruptcy." A "Stop foreclosure now" ad needs the statement too.
Meta: no "Are you bankrupt?"
Meta's personal attributes policy bars ads that assert or imply a person's vulnerable financial status, and it uses "Are you bankrupt? Check out our services." as its example of what's not allowed. Lines like "Drowning in debt?" or "Behind on your mortgage?" are likely to be rejected for the same reason. Describe the service instead: "Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 help from a local bankruptcy attorney." If Meta places a campaign in its Financial products and services special ad category, age, gender, ZIP code and lookalike targeting are limited too.
Google: bankruptcy, not "debt settlement"
Google's debt services policy limits US ads for debt settlement and debt management to approved non-profit credit counseling agencies, and they must be certified. Copy that promises to negotiate debts down can look like debt settlement, so we write bankruptcy firm ads about bankruptcy representation. Google also lists negative financial status as a sensitive interest category, and advertisers promoting in those categories can't use their own audience lists such as remarketing lists or Customer Match. Plan Google around search, not retargeting.
"Specialist" is a regulated word
ABA Model Rule 7.2(c) bars a lawyer from stating or implying certification as a specialist unless an approved or accredited organization certified them and the ad names it. "Bankruptcy specialists" on a banner can break it. Our law firm advertising rules guide covers the state bar side.
One bankruptcy practice, six different clients.
A renter with medical bills and a homeowner facing a sale date ask different questions, so each gets its own page and campaign.
What we build for bankruptcy firms.
We work with law firms across practice areas. For a bankruptcy firm, the three services run in this order, each split by chapter and matter type.
- 1
ChatGPT Ads
How ChatGPT Ads work- Separate campaigns for Chapter 7, Chapter 13, foreclosure and garnishment, so the urgent ones get their own budget.
- Ads that carry the Section 528 statement and never imply anything about the reader's finances.
- Every advertiser goes through OpenAI's business verification and ad review. We set it up and handle it.
- Campaigns can start around $25 a day in ad spend, paid to OpenAI directly.
- 2
AI SEO
How AI SEO works- Pages that answer what people ask AI: the means test in your state, what's exempt, what a Chapter 13 payment looks like, and your fees.
- The same firm details and practice areas on your website, Google Business Profile, Avvo, Justia and Martindale.
- A review plan that respects privacy: some clients won't want to post a review about bankruptcy, so we make it easy for the ones who will.
- Every month we ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI which bankruptcy lawyer to call in your city, and show you where you're named.
- 3
Google & Meta Ads
- Google Search campaigns on bankruptcy, foreclosure and garnishment terms, kept apart so one can't eat another's budget.
- Meta ads written around the service, not the reader's situation, so they pass review.
- Call and form tracking on every channel, tied to the chapter and matter type.
Your firm approves every ad and page before it goes live. Month-to-month, no long-term contract. One firm per case type, per city. We don't build websites or CRMs; we work with the ones you have.
Cost per signed client, by chapter.
What matters is how many leads became paying clients with a case filed, and what each one cost.
Track each lead to its outcome: consultation held, retained, fee paid, case filed, or not a fit. Booked consultations alone tell you little.
Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 fees often come in on different timelines, and part of a Chapter 13 fee may arrive later in the case. Report them separately or the numbers mislead you.
Where AI names you, calls, leads and signed cases, cost per signed client for each channel, and a call on what to scale and what to stop.
How to choose a bankruptcy marketing agency.
Whoever you hire, ask these before you sign.
- Do your ads include the Section 528 statement? If they don't know what it is, they haven't run bankruptcy ads.
- How do you write Meta ads without implying someone's finances?Ask to see example copy. "Struggling with debt?" is a red flag.
- Do you report signed clients or just leads?Bankruptcy leads are cheap. Paid, filed cases are what count.
- Do you split Chapter 7, Chapter 13 and foreclosure? One blended campaign spends on the cheapest clicks, not the best cases.
- Can you show me where AI assistants name my firm today?Ask for real answers for your city, not a score.
Bankruptcy lawyer marketing, answered plainly.
What is bankruptcy attorney marketing?
Everything a bankruptcy firm does so that someone facing garnishment, foreclosure or collection calls them first: showing up in AI answers and on Google, running ads that fit the rules, and turning calls into paid, filed cases.
Do bankruptcy attorneys have to say "We are a debt relief agency" in ads?
Under 11 U.S.C. § 528, ads for bankruptcy assistance directed to the general public must include that statement or a substantially similar one, and the Supreme Court held in Milavetz (2010) that this applies to attorneys. Ads about foreclosure, garnishment or debt collection help can be covered too.
Can bankruptcy lawyers run Facebook and Instagram ads?
Yes, but Meta bars ads that imply the viewer's financial situation. "Are you bankrupt?" is Meta's own example of a rejected ad. Write about the service, not the person, and include the Section 528 statement.
Can bankruptcy lawyers advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes, in the US. Every advertiser goes through OpenAI's business verification and ad review. We set it up and handle it. Your state bar rules and Section 528 apply there like anywhere else, and you approve every ad before it runs.
Should we market Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 separately?
Yes. The clients ask different questions and the fees work differently. Separate pages and campaigns show you which one pays off.
How much should a bankruptcy firm spend on marketing?
Start from what a signed Chapter 7 and a signed Chapter 13 client are worth to you, then test one channel. ChatGPT Ads can start around $25 a day in ad spend. We build the budget per matter type for your city and show it to you before anything runs.
Are bought bankruptcy leads worth it?
Sometimes, as a short-term fill. Shared leads are often sold to several firms, and you don't control the ads that produced them. Compare them with your own channels by cost per signed client, not price per lead.
