AI Overviews rarely appear on "personal injury lawyer in [city]" searches, where the map pack still rules. They appear on most of the questions people ask before they hire, like what to do after a crash. For lawyers, Google's AI answers cite your Google Business Profile far more than anything else, then Yelp, Justia and Avvo. So keep your Business Profile strong, and answer the pre-hiring questions on your own site.
When AI Overviews appear for injury searches
Whitespark studied 540 local searches in Houston, Phoenix and Denver across six industries, including personal injury lawyers. The pattern is clear:
| Type of search | Example | AI Overview shown |
|---|---|---|
| Service + city | "personal injury lawyers in Phoenix" | 15% (the map pack showed on 93%) |
| Informational | "what to do after a car accident" | 92% |
| Mixed | "how much is a whiplash claim worth in Texas" | 97% |
So when someone is ready to hire and searches for a lawyer by city, Google mostly still shows the map pack and ads. Before that, while they're working out what happened to them, Google answers with AI. That earlier moment is where firms are winning or losing trust.
What Google's AI cites for lawyers
BrightLocal analyzed about two million citations across ChatGPT, AI Overviews and AI Mode in August 2026. For lawyers, Google Business Profile made up 42% of citations, followed by Yelp (7.9%), Justia (3.2%), Avvo (2.5%), Lawyers.com (1.8%), Facebook (1.7%) and FindLaw (0.9%). The lawyer sample was small, but the order matches what we see in client checks.
The practical point: for Google's AI answers, your Business Profile is the single most important page about your firm. Categories, practice areas, hours, photos, Q&A and recent reviews all feed it.
What AI Mode changes
AI Mode is Google's full chat-style search, available to everyone in the US since May 2025. Instead of one AI paragraph above the results, the whole page is a conversation, and it can include local business results. It draws from a much wider set of sources than AI Overviews. Fewer people use it than regular search today, but it's where Google is heading.
What happens to clicks
A Pew Research study in 2025 found that when an AI Overview appeared, people clicked a regular result 8% of the time, compared with 15% without one. For informational injury questions, that means fewer visits to the blog posts firms used to rely on. Being the source the AI Overview quotes matters more than ranking third below it.
Nobody has published a solid study of AI search conversions for law firms yet. Early vendor data suggests visitors from AI answers convert well, but treat those numbers with caution.

Ads in and around AI answers
- Google Ads can appear above or below AI Overviews, and in the US inside them, in English.
- They're served through broad-match or AI Max Search campaigns, Performance Max and Shopping. There's no opt-out and no separate reporting for AI Overview placements.
- Google excludes some sensitive categories from AI Overview ads. Whether legal is excluded hasn't been confirmed.
- Ads in AI Mode were announced in 2026 and are rolling out; full US availability hasn't been confirmed by Google.
What a personal injury firm should do
- Treat your Google Business Profile as your main page
Right categories, every practice area, accurate hours, real photos, answered questions, and a steady flow of recent reviews that mention case types.
- Answer the pre-hiring questions on your site
What to do after a crash, who pays medical bills, how fault works in your state. Clear, short answers near the top of the page, written for your state.
- Keep the directories consistent
Yelp, Justia, Avvo, Lawyers.com and FindLaw are the next sources Google's AI cites. Same details everywhere.
- Add structured data
LegalService, Attorney and FAQ schema help Google connect your pages to your firm.
- Keep Search ads running
The map pack and ads still own "lawyer in [city]" searches. AI answers change the research phase, not the hiring click.
- Check by hand every month
Search Console doesn't separate AI Overview traffic. Search your key questions yourself and note whether you're cited.
Questions
Do AI Overviews show up when people search for a lawyer?
Rarely, for searches like "personal injury lawyer in Phoenix": about 15% in Whitespark's study, where the map pack showed 93% of the time. They show on most informational questions people ask before hiring.
How do I get my firm cited in Google's AI Overviews?
Mostly through your Google Business Profile, consistent directory listings and clear answers to common injury questions on your own site. There's no form to submit and no way to pay for it.
Can I opt my ads out of AI Overviews?
No. Eligible campaigns can show there automatically, and Google doesn't report those placements separately.
Is AI Mode replacing Google search?
Not yet. It's available to all US users, but most searches still go through regular results. It's worth preparing for, because it uses more sources and holds longer conversations.
