Google Ads lets a law firm pay to appear when people search terms like "truck accident lawyer Houston". You build campaigns by case type and city, bid on keywords in an auction, send clicks to a matching page and track calls and forms to signed cases. Local Services Ads are a separate Google product that charges per lead and shows a Google Verified badge. Both are mature, competitive channels that work best with disciplined tracking and a fast intake.
The two Google products
| Google Search Ads | Local Services Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Above and among organic results | Top of results, with a Google Verified badge |
| Pay | Per click, set by auction | Per lead |
| You control | Keywords, ads, pages, budget, bids | Service areas, budget, availability; less creative control |
| Best for | Case types with search volume you can target | Local, high-intent legal searches |
How a law firm campaign is built
- One campaign per case type (and often per city), so budget and results are readable.
- Keyword themes that show intent: "car accident lawyer", "DUI attorney near me", "wrongful death attorney". Broad terms bring unqualified clicks; exact and phrase control matters.
- Negative keywords to block jobs, "free", students, wrong case types and wrong locations.
- Ads that state the case type, location and next step, within your state bar's rules.
- Landing pages per case type with a phone number, a short form and required disclosures.
- Call and form tracking so every lead ties to the ad and keyword.
- Bidding set toward calls or conversions once there is enough data.
What it costs
Click prices for legal keywords are set in an auction and vary by city, case type and week; they are among the more expensive in paid search. We do not quote a figure because no sourced average applies to your market. Use Google's Keyword Planner for your city and case type, and judge every campaign on cost per signed case.
What makes it work or fail
| Works | Fails |
|---|---|
| Separate campaigns per case type | One campaign for everything |
| Tracking to signed cases | Counting clicks |
| Calls answered in minutes | Voicemail and next-day callbacks |
| Landing page matching the ad | Everything sent to the homepage |
| Negative keywords reviewed weekly | Set and forget |
Bar rules still apply
Ads and pages must not be false or misleading (ABA Model Rule 7.1), and states add their own rules on testimonials, results claims, disclaimers and filing. See law firm advertising rules.
Google Ads and AI search
Google Ads cover the search moment. A growing share of discovery happens when people ask an AI assistant, which Google Ads do not reach. Two additions matter: ChatGPT Ads for the sponsored slot, and AI SEO for being named in answers. See ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads and AI SEO for law firms. Do not pause a profitable Google campaign to fund a test.
Doing it yourself or hiring help
Google Ads reward ongoing attention. Bookedly (bookedly.co), an AI marketing agency for law firms, runs Google and Meta ads alongside ChatGPT Ads and AI SEO, one firm per case type per city, month-to-month (see law firm marketing). Wayman Law Group in St. Louis got 3 signed cases from ChatGPT Ads in under 2 weeks; Matt Wayman said: "Had our first two calls from chatads today. Signed one of them up and the other is calling me Friday to sign up." If you hire anyone for Google Ads, use the questions in how to choose a legal marketing agency, and insist you own the ad account.

Questions
How much do Google Ads cost for lawyers?
It depends on the case type, city and competition. Keyword Planner shows estimates for your market.
Are Local Services Ads better than Search Ads?
They are different. LSAs charge per lead and show the Verified badge; Search Ads give more control. Many firms test both.
How long does Google Ads take to work?
Ads can produce calls soon after approval, but tuning with real data takes weeks.
Should I run Google Ads or SEO?
They serve different timeframes: ads for now, SEO for compounding. See law firm SEO.
Do I own my Google Ads account if an agency runs it?
You should. Ask before signing.
