Use both, but do not compare them as equals. Google Ads catches people who typed an urgent search and will compare several firms. ChatGPT Ads put one labeled sponsored card next to an AI answer, at the moment someone is already asking which lawyer to call. ChatGPT Ads are a new channel with a $25 daily minimum, so a small test is cheap; Google is mature and its click prices are set by a crowded auction.
Side by side
| ChatGPT Ads | Google Search Ads | Google Local Services Ads | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the ad shows | Sponsored card with the AI answer | Above and among the organic links | Top of results, pay per lead |
| How price is set | Second-price auction weighted by relevance; OpenAI has not published averages for legal ads | Keyword auction; check Google's Keyword Planner for your city and case type | Per lead, not per click |
| Minimum to start | $25 a day per campaign | No fixed minimum | No fixed minimum |
| What the person did | Asked an AI which lawyer to call | Typed a search, often compares firms | Typed a search, sees the Google Verified badge |
| Approval | Business verification and ad review; firm must be licensed where the ad runs | Google ad policy | Google screening and Verified badge |
| Maturity | New: fewer advertisers so far (our observation, not an OpenAI statistic) | Mature, crowded | Mature |
We do not quote a Google click price here. Injury keywords are among the costliest in paid search, but the figure varies by city, case type and week; your own Google Ads account or Keyword Planner shows the real range for your market.
What this means for budget
- Do not pause Google to fund ChatGPT. Google still signs cases. ChatGPT Ads are an added channel, not a replacement.
- Start ChatGPT small, by case type. A separate campaign for each case type (truck, car, DUI, divorce, immigration) keeps the data readable. $25 a day is the platform minimum; set the real number with your cost per signed case in mind.
- Judge on signed cases, not clicks. A cheap click that never calls is not cheap. Track calls and forms back to the ad that brought them.
- Expect different volume. ChatGPT Ads reach people on the Free and Go plans; Google reaches everyone who searches. Do not assume the same lead count.
When ChatGPT Ads fit best
- Few competitors in your city are bidding yet.
- The case type is asked as a plain-language question ("who pays if I was hit while driving for Uber?").
- You can answer a lead within minutes.
When Google should stay first
- You already have a profitable Google campaign with a tracked cost per signed case.
- Your case type is searched urgently and in volume.
- You depend on Local Services Ads and the Google Verified badge.
Do ChatGPT Ads change what ChatGPT recommends?
No. The sponsored card is labeled and separate from the answer. Getting named in the answer itself is a different job, called AI SEO or GEO: see AI SEO for law firms.
Proof it can work
Bookedly (bookedly.co) runs ChatGPT Ads for law firms. Wayman Law Group in St. Louis got 3 signed cases from ChatGPT Ads in under 2 weeks. Matt Wayman said: "Had our first two calls from chatads today. Signed one of them up and the other is calling me Friday to sign up." One firm is not a benchmark, and we do not promise any result.
Questions
Can law firms advertise on ChatGPT?
In the US, yes, with conditions: licensed where the ad runs, OpenAI verification and ad review, and compliance with your state bar's rules. See Can lawyers advertise on ChatGPT? and how to advertise on ChatGPT as a lawyer.
Are ChatGPT Ads cheaper than Google Ads?
The entry cost is lower: $25 a day is the minimum, with no published legal-ad click averages. Cost per signed case is what matters, and the channel is too new for reliable benchmarks, so we do not quote one.
Which should I start with?
If you have no Google campaign, start with Google and add ChatGPT in one case type. If you have both running, split by case type and compare cost per signed case after 30 days. More on Google in Google Ads for law firms.
